What Does a Successful Web Business Cost?

When I think back, some years ago people were completely surprised when I asked them about what does a successful web business cost because they were focusing only on making money online and many of them didn’t even think about investing money in the business.

And, because we meet new people here every day, let’s make this very clear:

Yes, you will have to invest money in your business to get started and to run it successfully but, first of all you will have to invest money in yourself to get the skills you need to become a successful entrepreneur. Please do yourself a favor and stop dreaming about a business that makes you money without investing in it, ok?

So what do you need to get started?

1. Domain

Your domain is your home address on the web, where your potential customers or clients can find you, your services and products. Costs: $2.95 – 8.95 sometimes more, per domain name. Look for domains with the .com extension first, but you can use as well .co, .info, .org, .biz extensions. What domain extension you choose may impact on your rankings: using other extensions than .com means that you will have to do some more work on the on-page and off-page SEO for your site.

2. Hosting

Your domain needs to be hosted by a company like Hostgator, Brainhost, Bluehost etc. and this hosting may cost around $20 per month, depending on the package you choose. That’s why it is a bit difficult to give you some exact prices here…

3. Autoresponder

You’ve heard that “the money is in the list”, so you will want to get subscribers and build your own list to promote your products and services to. The most recommended autoresponders are AWeber and Getresponse, for about $20 per month.

4. Optional Services

When you think of backlinking, SEO and advertising, courses to get the skills you need, software, etc. you will have additional expenses to cover. And when your business starts growing, these expenses will be quickly around $300 per month without big promotions or paid advertising.

5. Travel expenses

Yes, you will also have to visit live events to meet new people and to make new contacts. Networking is an important part of your work. Costs? From about $500 up to… open end.

6. Outsourcing

As your business grows you cannot do all the work on your own and you will have to think about outsourcing tasks or projects. That will cost you again around $800 depending on how often, what and where you outsource to.

What does a successful web business cost?

Generally spoken, the costs can easily sum up to $1.500 – 2.000 a month, often before you even made a dime. Some of these costs are one time costs, but most of them are recurring costs on a monthly or yearly basis. Please think about that before you start an online business, just like you should think about it when you plan to start an offline business. In both cases, you will have to invest money in your business first.

Note: This is a general overview, nothing more. No one can name the exact costs for your specific business, except yourself.
