Video in the Sidebar

How to get a video in the sidebar? This was one of the questions members asked on our group meeting last week. So I put myself to work and did some research on that. I’ve found some very interesting solutions to let videos show up in the sidebar, most of them paid ones. Of course, they have other features as well, great features, but if you don’t necessarily need them, why should you pay for them?!

What ever you decide for yourself, whether you choose a free or a paid version, here is what you should know – not only if you want to get your video in the sidebar:

Many software programs sold on the Internet have their origin in software, scripts and tools already available
on the market  for free. Guess, where they come from… You’re right: WordPress, Microsoft, Firefox, Google, etc.

Why paid versions? Well, for software marketers that’s a great source of income. People love to buy software, even if they cannot put them to work properly or cannot use their full potential. Software marketers used to check the tools already available for free, take that idea and develop it further, add some new features and create their own new solutions: new plugins, widgets, add-ons, etc. That’s how new, paid versions are born.

But, let’s get back to the solution for showing up a video in the sidebar. On the WordPress Plugins page I’ve found a free solution to get videos showing up in the sidebar:

Video Sidebar Widgets

Video Sidebar Widgets is a collection of sidebar widgets for displaying flash videos from 14 video sharing networks, including Youtube, Vimeo, BlipTV, Google, etc. and a free WordPress plugin to show up a video in
the sidebar.

Why should you use a video in the sidebar?

A video showing up in the sidebar is still new, something that you don’t see very often, something that makes
a difference. So it’s more likely that visitors will want to click and watch the video, right?

What kind of videos can be shown by using the plugin?

The developer of this collection says:

“This plugin enables the user to embed Flash Video from various video sharing networks into the widgetised sidebar and content of a WordPress powered blog.”

According to his homepage, this plugin includes:

  • Video Sidebar Widget
  • Random Video Sidebar Widget
  • Video Quicktag in TinyMCE Editor
  • Post Meta Video Widget

The following video sharing networks are supported:

  1. YouTube
  2. Vimeo
  3. WordPress.tv
  4. Veoh
  5. Metacafe
  6. Revver
  7. Blip.tv
  8. MySpace Videos
  9. DailyMotion
  10. Viddler
  11. Tudou
  12. Youku
  13. 6.cn
  14. Google Videos

How to install the video in the sidebar widgets?

Install the plugin using Search:

  • Search for Video Sidebar Widgets in Plugins–> Add New Plugins
  • Once you’ve found it, click on Install Now
  • Click  OK  to accept plugin installation
  • Once installed, click Activate
  • Done!

Install Plugin using the .zip format:

  1. Visit WP Admin –> Plugins –> Add New –> Upload
  2. Upload the video-sidebar-widgets.zip file
  3. Once uploaded, click Activate Plugin
  4. You’re done!

Find here some more detailed information about the plugin, the installation and how to use it.

As you see, I don’t use videos in the sidebar of my own sites yet. There are some changes to be made before videos can be shown in the sidebar. You can read about that as well on the developer’s site. However, I hope you enjoyed this article about a free solution for getting a video in the sidebar.
